NOTE:  IN THE UNITED STATES, RESIDENTIAL WORKING DRAWINGS ARE SCALED AT 1/4″ = 1′-0″.  PRELIMINARY PLANS OR MULTI-FAMILY BUILDING PLANS ARE GENERALLY DRAWN AT 1/8″ = 1′-0″.  DETAILS MAY BE DRAWN AT 1/2″ = 1′-0″ OR 1″ = 1′-0″.

IN THE METRIC WORLD, WORKING DRAWINGS ARE DRAWN AT 1:50 WITH HALF-SIZED PRELIMINARY STUDY AND MULTI-FAMILY BUILDING PLANS DRAWN AT 1:100.

These scales are generally used for site plans and land surveys and will vary along with the size of the land parcel.  Larger scales, such as 1″=60′-0″ are generally used for big tracts of land and smaller scales, such as 1″=10′-0″ are used on individual lots.

Metric is used on both architectural and site planning drawings.  House plans are usually drawn at 1:50.  Site plans and details vary.
