Engineering scales in home design are generally used by the civil engineer or surveyor to draw the property / site plan.  Each square represents one foot.  This scale is most commonly used for individual lots when you want the finished drawing to be on smaller sized paper.  The pattern is 10 squares per inch with a heavier sub-grid every inch (10′).
